Do soul mates truly exist? What causes us to fall in and out of love with one another? What do we do when we fail to feel the spark we used to? Nocturne is a series of vignettes scattered with movement and dance set to the music of Chopin. It traverses the experiences of one couple’s rises and falls, shown through the eyes of both their past and present selves. Jack and Emma Shelton are two ordinary people working to live and love together as they struggle to find happiness. Nocturne journeys through their ten year relationship and eloquently explores its themes of love, companionship, and self-realization.

Alive returns to the festival for its third year with yet another original piece co-created and co-directed by one of the companies’ resident directors. Alive’s previous two shows at the Fringe were multi-award winning including the Best Physical Theatre award (Four Clowns and Porter’s Macbeth) and with Nocturne’s storytelling through dynamic, poignant and visceral physicality and movement the company is sure it has another award-winning contender on its hands.

Alive Theatre was founded in January 2008 by CSULB theatre grads Jeremy Aluma and Danielle Dauphinee, with considerable help from their peers. The mission of Alive Theatre is to establish theatre as an exciting and essential form of expression and entertainment for a new generation not yet aware of the power of experiencing living art. Knowing that not all who wander are lost, this band of nomadic artists traverses the city of Long Beach in its quest for a more enlightened populace. By incorporating all art forms into the theatrical experience, Alive Theatre strives to strengthen the bonds among artists in its community and to act as a gateway through which audiences will explore the creative movement taking place in their very own neighborhoods. Selected credits include The Long Beach Poppin’ Play Festival – Lafayette Hotel; Four Clowns, Porter’s Macbeth- Hollywod Fringe Festival 2010/11; Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead – Naples Fine Art Center; References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot - Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA); Frozen - Immanuel Center for Conscious Living; Orson’s Shadow and boom– Long Beach Playhouse.

Kate Bowen (Co-Creator/Director) graduated from California State University Long Beach with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre in May 2011. Post graduation she hit the ground running and conceived and directed an original piece suitably named Silent Shout. It was a show which utilized only neutral masks and actors movements as it journeyed through visceral stories of humanity without the use of text. Shortly after Bowen directed Talk to Me Like the Rain...and Let Me Listen a short play by Tennessee Williams. Bowen went against its traditional male and female casting to explore a women to women relationship which achieved an effective and distinct translation that critics applauded her for. Both productions were in Long Beach with Alive Theatre. Having extensive training in jazz and modern dance, Bowen is able to successfully weave movement and dance into her theatrical endeavors, and continues to hone her unique style with each show she creates. Bowen’s credits include choreographer for The Aftershocks at the Long Beach Playhouse(2011), directing Le Reve Collectif for Alive Theatre’s 'Long Beach Poppin Play Festival'(2011), worked with Tara Arts in London and studied Commedia Del Arte in Italy with Orlando Pabotoy, Arts Professor at NYU. Passion, beauty, and humanity are the driving forces in Bowen’s artistic visions.

Scott Dare (Co-Creator/Director) just returned from the UK where he recently finished working in tandem with B Arts to produce Take This Waltz. Nocturne will be Scott's third dip into the waters of directing. Other past directing projects include Big Love and assisting for Gentlemen Reduxed. Scott graduated from California State University Long Beach in 2011, and plans to pursue his graduate studies at Royal Holloway University, London. His movement background comes mostly from Shotokan karate and ballroom dance, with an occasional class in contemporary and hip-hop dance. Favorite past performance credits include Up (Chance Theatre), Silent Shout, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead(Alive Theatre), and A Man Walks into the World and Dog Sees God(CSULB).
