California Central Coast December Theatre Opportunities

California-Central-Coast-December-Theatre-Opportunities-20010101

As we make our way on into December, I trust you will want to include attending a show or two at any one of our various theatre and live performance venues here on the California Central Coast as part of your Holiday Season entertainment schedule!

The North County Dance and Performing Arts Foundation (www.northcountyperformingarts.org) will present The Nutcracker at the Templeton Performing Arts Center through December 11.

This production has come to be cherished by the local community because it is a traditional rendition of the holiday classic appropriate for audiences of all ages.  Professional guest artists, over sixty members of the community, and professional choreographers come together to make this production truly grand.  Cast members train at Class Act Dance Studio in Paso Robles, and dancers in the Paso Robles Chamber Ballet are featured in the leading roles.

Under the direction of Cheryle Armstrong and her staff of choreographers, this production features brilliant costumes and festive sets to compliment Tchaikovsky’s beloved musical score.

The Pewter Plough Playhouse (www.pewterploughplayhouse.org) in Cambria is proud to present Fascinating Gershwin! -a musical memoir showcasing the extraordinary songs of America's favorite composing team, George and Ira Gershwin, running through December 31

The Theatre at the Old Grammar Schoolin Cambria (TOGS) (http://artistsofcambria.com/cambriapac/id4.html) and Allied Arts Theatre's next production will be the romantic comedy Almost, Maine (performances January 27 - February 19).

SLO Little Theatre's (www.slolittletheatre.org) current main stage production is A Christmas Story, running through December 23.  Auditions for Ubu's Other Shoe's readers' theatre production of Opus will be held December 12 & 13 (performances February 3 & 4).  ACT's (Academy of Creative Theatre) The Little Prince will be presented January 13-29.

Kelrik Productions (www.kelrikproductions.com) is pleased to announce the first 2 productions of their 2012 BEYOND Season - a remount of the children's favorite Pinkalicious (matinee performances January 21 - February 5) and Avenue Q (evening performances January 13 - February 4).  The remainder of the 2012 Season will soon be announced - stay tuned!

The God Is Still Speaking Players' (https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/92718528887) recently completed their “Celebration In Song” musical variety show to benefit GALA and PFLAG.  After the Holiday Season, they will be holding auditions for either a readers’ theatre production or another musical revue in early March - stay tuned!

Upcoming performances at the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center (www.pacslo.org) include SLO Civic Ballet’s The Nutcracker on December 10 & 11, Charles Phoenix: Retro Holiday Slide Show on December 17 (Pavilion), Cuesta Master Chorale’s Holiday Concert on December 17 (Cohan Center), and the Forbes Pipe Organ Holiday Concert Sing-Along on December 18.

Murder In Mind Productions (www.murderinmind.com) will present A Dickens of a Mystery, through January 29, at The Spyglass Inn in Shell Beach (reservations required).

The Spot (https://www.facebook.com/#!/hit.the.spot) in Arroyo Grande will present the Studio of Performing Arts’ production of The Grinch December 9-11, Pismo Beach Youth Theater's Once On This Island Decmber 16-18, Comedy On The Spot: Improv Comedy on December 22 & 23, and All In One Music Productions' A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Forclosure on December 29 & 30, along with Spinning the Globe and a simulcast of the ball dropping in Times Square on December 31.

Sorcerer Productions (https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Sorcerer-Productions/105954829426281) presents Plaid Tidings through December 18 in the Clark Center Studio Theatre in Arroyo Grande [NOTE: Caught a Sunday matinee of this show and it is absolutely delightful!].

LIVE UPDATE: NEWSIES, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, FOLLIES & WICKED Are in the Lead...

Curt Miner received his degree in theatre from Northern Arizona University and has been involved in theatre, educationally and professionally, for nearly 40 years now. He is currently Pastor of the United Church of Christ in San Luis Obispo, CA (www.sloucc.org), where he founded a theatre outreach ministry known as The God Is Still Speaking Players (check them out on Facebook). Their first production was the West Coast Premiere of a new play by Gordon Greene (one of Curt's former theatre professors from back at NAU) entitled "The Scopes Monkey Trial: What Really Happened" in October of 2008. Curt and his wife of 35 years, Linda, worked together as Director and Music Director on a production of "Godspell" June 2009. The group presented a readers' theatre production of Archibald MacLeish's Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning play "J.B." November 2009, participated in a collaborative effort with Bent Angel Productions in a staged reading of "12 Angry Men" in February 2010, presented "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" the first 2 weekends of September 2010, embarked upon another collaborative effort with Bent Angel Productions of a staged reading of Dylan Thomas' "Under Milk Wood" in November 2010, presented a readers' theatre production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" the first weekend this past March, mounted a production of "Sister Amnesia's Country Western Nunsense Jamboree" the first 2 weekends of September, and presented "Celebration In Song" - a musical variety show to benefit the work of GALA and PFLAG in November. A readers' theatre presentation (possibly "Our Town") or another musical revue will be presented this coming March, with "Snoopy" (sequel to YAGMCB) on the schedule for the first 2 weekends in September. When people ask him "Why a theatre outreach ministry?" Curt tells them "I have found that theatre is sometimes able to touch a person's heart and soul more deeply than the best crafted worship experience ... that's why."
