Kodo, Japan's preeminent performing arts ensemble, returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall tonight, February 5 at 8 PM as part of the group's One Earth Tour 2013: Legend, the first tour under the guidance of new Artistic Director, kabuki icon Tamasaburo Bando. The program will feature several re-envisioned works and new pieces inspired by Bando's distinct aesthetic and deep experience, as well as the group's hallmark taiko - the nearly 900-pound drum - a show-stopping instrument that demands both strength and tenderness.
Kodo unites high-energy percussion, elegant music, dance, and the striking physical prowess needed to sustain a precise yet powerful sound. The group first exploded onto the world stage at the Berlin Festival in 1981 and has since delivered over 3,500 performances on five continents from war-torn Croatia to New York's Carnegie Hall. Through constant collaborations with musicians, dancers, singers and actors in many countries, Kodo relentlessly explores the limits of the taiko and the closely-related traditional Japanese performing arts.
