Los Angeles: Fountain Theatre's OPUS extends through August 29

L.A. premiere of "OPUS" at Fountain Theatre extends through August 29

Michael Hollinger's behind-the-scenes look at a high-strung string quartet has received critical and audience raves.

LOS ANGELES, CA - July 12, 2010 - The Fountain Theatre has extended the Los Angeles premiere of Opus by Michael Hollinger through August 29th.

Opus is a smart, funny and insightful portrait of the fictional Lazara String Quartet. As the foursome prepares for a high profile performance at the White House, tensions mount and personalities clash. When their brilliant, but unstable, violist disappears, the others must seek someone new to perform with them. Will the talented young woman they select fit into a group of men with a complex history? With only days left to prepare, the musicians must navigate the creative, yet often disharmonious, path of creating a masterpiece. Violist-turned playwright Michael Hollinger skillfully establishes how four very distinct personalities must, in the pursuit of artistic excellence, synthesize with one another to create one seamless sound.

The Fountain production is receiving across-the-board raves from audiences and critics alike.  In the Los Angeles Times, Charlotte Stoudt writes, "The Fountain Theatre scores with a brisk and entertaining staging … buoyant performances… CRITIC'S CHOICE!"  Back Stage reviewer Les Spindle says, "Levy's classy production delivers a symphony of harmonious pleasures… CRITIC'S PICK," and The LA Weekly's Deborah Klugman urges, "GO!"  Voters for Los Angeles' prestigious Ovation Award have designated the production "Ovation Recommended." Madeline Shaner of the Beverly Press sums it up this way: "There’s little to say about perfection except that the Fountain Theatre does it again."

Opus is directed by Simon Levy and features Daniel Blinkoff, Jia Doughman, Gregory G. Giles, Christian Lebano and Cooper Thornton.

Performances continue on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm through August 29.  Please note: there are no performances the week of July 29-August 1. Tickets are $25.00 on Thursdays and Fridays and $30.00 on Saturdays and Sundays.  On Thursdays and Fridays only, students with ID are $18.00 and seniors over 62 are $23.00.  The Fountain Theatre is located at 5060 Fountain Avenue (at Normandie) in Los Angeles.  Secure, on-site parking is available for $5.00.  The Fountain Theatre is air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible.  For reservations and information, call (323) 663-1525 or go to www.FountainTheatre.com.

From a very early age, Amber Romina Cassell always knew that she did not want to be a writer. While attending film school at the University of Southern California, however, she volunteered as a critic for the school newspaper in order to see all the plays and screenings around town and the rest, as they say, is history. A devoted lover of musical theater, Amber has had the immense pleasure of covering some of Los Angeles' most prominent theatrical events and has conducted in-depth interviews with some of Broadway's greatest talents and strives everyday to help promote and encourage the LA theater scene.
