MY INNER SOLE is an arresting and haunting image-fueled performance piece about the memories of a concentration camp survivor and the stories she passes down to her daughter. Through prose, dance, music and 18 evocative skeletons, MY INNER SOLE is vivid and powerful exploration of the inherited experience of loss as seen through the eyes of second generation genocide survivors.

MY INNER SOLE is based on creator Zuzka Kurtz's memories of stories of Holocaust survival shared by her mother (her parents were interned in Auschwitz and Dachau). Her exploration of familial memory takes form through the interaction of 18 costumed skeletons (18 meaning life in Kabala). Common objects such as shoes and cloth unravel the stories that were passed down from her mother.

The seeds of the production began as an art installation at the Slaughterhouse Space in California, curated by artist Pat Lenz. After the show's success, Ms. Kurtz reconceived the project for the stage.

MY INNER SOLE features acclaimed dancer Wendy Osserman, two-time Obie Award-winning actress Kathryn Grody (The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Top Girls) and acclaimed actress and voice over artist Cynthia Adler. Rounding out the cast is young dancer and puppeteer Pepper Fajans and actor Kenji. Mac Gollehon arranged and performs live music (trombone and trumpet), as well as music by Adrienne Cooper, Iva Bittova and Kristine Norderval.

The design team includes Christine Shallenberg (lighting) and Pepper Fajans (theatrical design). Ms. Kurtz is the costume and installation designer.

Zuzka Kurtz was born in Prague Czechoslovakia. After living and studying art in Israel and Italy, she moved to New York and established a design house. For 22 years ZUZKA was a recognized label in fashion, textile and costume design. During that time, she traveled extensively in India, Burma and Vietnam working with weavers and artisans and creating luscious collections that sold in high end stores in the US, Japan and Europe. In 2009 her first art installation MY INNER SOLE, curated by the artist Pat Lenz, opened in the Slaughterhouse Space in California. Kurtz's recent collaborations included costumes for Wendy Osserman company and Jill Sigman's Thinkdance company, as well as optical fiber costume for an opera for the soprano Kristin Norderval, a video "Threading" in collaboration with Liz Magic Laser and an Artist book MY INNER SOLE with Oriana Reich.
