SWEENEY TODD in Broadway SWEENEY TODD
MUSICAL THEATRE REPERTORY - UNIV OF SOUTHERN CALIF
1/24-1/27/2013
The rare instance of a musical thriller, Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe!Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, SWEENEY TODD nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor: audiences find themselves laughing hysterically one moment and gasping in surprise the next.At the show's core is a challenging score of epic proportion with two tasty tour de force roles in Sweeney and his comic female accomplice Mrs. Lovett. Although it has been extremely popular with opera companies and in concert presentation, SWEENEY TODD is equally effective as an intimate chamber musical.

G2K OKLAHOMA!
City of El Segundo
1/18-1/27/2013
The 'G2K' Getting To Know Series: Uniquely adapted musicals specifically for youth performers. Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA! In this adaptation for pre-high school students, the content has been edited to better suit younger attention spans, but all the elements that make this show a classic are still in place. You and your students will be enchanted by the timeless story and the dazzling score, while at the same time learning about theater and its production. One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.Music by Tom Snow; Lyrics by Dean Pitchford; Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie; Based on the original screenplay by Dean Pitchford; Additional Music by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman

AVENUE Q is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.Puppet RentalBe sure to visit MTI's Prop Shop to see our AVENUE Q puppets to rent!AVENUE Q NEW YORKVisit the official "Avenue Q New York" for NYC ticketing and more information.

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
Curtis Theatre - Stagelight Productions
1/17-2/3/2013
The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.Lyrics by Tim Rice; Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

FOOTLOOSE
Norris Center for the Performing Arts
1/24-2/3/2013

DESERT ROSE PRODUCTIONS INC.

MARRY ME A LITTLE uses several unknown songs by the undisputed master of the contemporary Broadway musical to tell a charming and bittersweet tale of love, loneliness and survival as a modern single. Two single strangers, left alone in their studio apartments on a Saturday night, pass their time with sweetly secret, unshared fantasies, never knowing that they're just a floor away from each other and the end of their lonely dreams. Originally conceived by director Norman Rene and playwright Craig Lucas (Prelude To A Kiss), this ingeniously-constructed "revusical"¯ is told entirely through songs either written early in Sondheim's career (including numbers SATURDAY NIGHT) or cut from his groundbreaking Broadway musicals (A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, COMPANY, FOLLIES and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC). A must for Sondheim aficionados, this easily produced one-act musical is also perfect as a benefit, curtain warmer or second-stage production, as it can be played on virtually any existing set - or no set at all. It's a smart, funny, sophisticated and moving evening, and a fascinating lo

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
Lakehills Covenant Church
1/25-2/4/2013
It seems especially fitting that the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent '60s, should have at its center a social and political rebel. Jesus' meteor-like rise in renown provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As his radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ's final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score, by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.Lyrics by Tim Rice; Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

The Chairs in Broadway THE CHAIRS
STAGEStheatre
1/19-2/16/2013
STAGEStheatre is proud to present Eugene Ionesco's absurdist farce The Chairs running January 19- February 17. Directed by Jesse Runde, this absurdist classic reveals a couple frantically preparing their home for a highly anticipated social gathering, but quickly find their small space is overwhelmed by the chairs needed to seat their guests. The more chairs that come into the room, the more absurd the situation becomes, separating them from each other and transforming them and their relationship. Runde, in her first production for STAGEStheatre, is a longtime fan of this masterpiece. Though rarely performed, Runde is at once intrigued and challenged by the work. "We're creating a production that honors the comic as much as the tragic present in the text. While it's tempting to favor the dark over the light in interpreting Ionesco's work, the light is how we reveal the dark and make it less threatening. For me, the catharsis this laughter brings is beyond any Greek tragedy." Although written in 1952, The Chairs did not run on Broadway until 1998, earning several Tony Award nominations. One of Ionesco's most popular plays, The Chairs was first performed in Paris. It was soon praised for its unique style and became a defining example of Theatre of the Absurd -- a literary philosophy that emphasized the absurdity and futility of the human condition.
