Roslyn Kind Sizzles @ Catalina Jazz Club

Roslyn_Kind_Sizzles_Catalina_Jazz_Club_20010101

Enough comparisons with sister Barbra Streisand! Roslyn Kind is her very own special creation, a singer's singer whose star shines brightly with its individual sparkling light. Based on her performance @ the Catalina Jazz Club Friday October 8, Ms. Kind, apart from possessing a uniquely sizzling vocal style, is warm, funny and joyous, sharing that joy with each and every one of her countless fans, including those in attendance such as legendary singers Linda Hopkins and Diahann Carroll.

The 75 minute program included beautiful standards such as Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Getting To Know You" with an novel arrangement by Cortes Alexander, Marilyn & Alan Bergman's glorious "How Do You Keep The Music Playing?", Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love", cleverly combined by Kind with a song entitled "The Island", a stunning "Speak Low", also arranged by Alexander, Leslie Bricusse's tantalizing hit song from the first Superman film "Can You Read My Mind?" and Kander & Ebb's shaker "All That Jazz". There was also a lovely tribute to Cy Coleman with "The Best Is Yet To Come", and an all-too-brief encore of John Lennon's "Imagine". I have never heard Stephen Schwartz's "Meadowlark" from The Baker's Wife sung with quite the amount of feeling and clarity as given by Roz Kind. An original composition, the gorgeous "What Love Has Done" by Gloria Sklerov provided Kind with one of her greatest numbers, one that she should record for posterity. There was also a precious moment with a picture of her dog Josh that she placed on top of the piano after singing "At Times Like This" that shows just how much you need a true friend. Proving further versatility in her repertoire there was the scintillating Jerry Herman "It's Today" from Mame. Incidentally, Kind has all the genuine warmth and vivacity to play this role; she would make an ideal Mame. Also on tap: a riveting "SomeDay" with mention of her adulation for the dramatic Shirley Bassey. The entire concert was accompanied at the piano by wonderfully versatile Sam Kriger, musical director.

Roz Kind performs every song as if it were a concerto and every ounce of her soul is there including a freedom of body movement and a fluid use of the hands that so expressively aids the story she is interpreting. This lady is dynamically enthralling with a one-of-a-kind thrilling style and phrasing that make her a phenomenal artiste of music. Don't miss her Saturday at 8 pm at the Calalina Jazz Club (October 9) and wherever she may appear in the near future.

Her terrific CD Come What May, with many of the above mentioned songs, may be purchased by visiting her website:
