The Swell Season, She & Him, The Bird and The Bee Debut at Hollywood Bowl 7/18

The_Swell_Season_She_Him_The_Bird_and_The_Bee_Debut_at_Hollywood_Bowl_20010101

The 2010 KCRW World Festival series at the Hollywood Bowl continues on Sunday, July 18, at 7p.m., with performances by The Swell Season, She & Him and The Bird and The Bee. KCRW personalities Liza Richardson and Chris Douridas host.

The Swell Season is Glen Hansard (from the Irish band, The Frames) and Marketa Irglova (classically trained Czech pianist and vocalist), who make their debut at the Hollywood Bowl in support of their latest release, Strict Joy. The pair starred as working class immigrants in the 2007 film Once, which went on to become the most successful independent feature of the year, and received an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the film's single "Falling Slowly." Once: Music From the Motion Picture went gold, and Hansard and Irglova found themselves performing to sold out crowds throughout the world. Strict Joy, the anticipated follow-up to the motion picture soundtrack, "maintains the relatability and sincerity that made the soundtrack to Once so compelling." - Billboard.

Sharing a love of vintage pop, folk artist M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel make up the critically acclaimed duo She & Him, which released its second studio album Volume Two in March 2010. The follow up to 2008's Volume One, which was named album of the year by Paste Magazine, Volume Two is a collection of covers and songs written by Deschanel. As with
Volume One, the prevailing mood is bittersweet, dreamy, and romantic. Spin magazine says of the album, "Buffeted by Ward's pillowy acoustic strums, Deschanel is a convincing soft-rock goddess. They both seem to be having a blast."

Making sublime, sophisticated pop music can be tougher than it sounds. The Bird and the Bee, the duo of singer Inara George and multi-instrumental/Grammy-nominated producer Greg Kurstin, know this not only from composing original material for their full-lengths, The Bird and the Bee and Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future, but also occasional forays into the catalogs of other songwriters. George and Kurstin's latest release is a collection of Hall & Oates covers, The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates. As that no-nonsense title implies, the bird and the bee's
feelings about Hall & Oates aren't framed with a wink or a cocked eyebrow. Their love for
this music is genuine. The Bird and The Bee previewed their Hall & Oates interpretations at a live show in March 2010, performing "at the top of its game, lithely hopping back and forth between its
own jazz-pop tunes and Hall and Oates' most ubiquitous yacht-rock anthems." - Spin magazine.
