Violinist Hilary Hahn Returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall 11/1

Violinist-Hilary-Hahn-Returns-to-Walt-Disney-Concert-Hall-20010101

Violinist Hilary Hahn returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall in a recital of music by Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, as well as selections from her own commissioning project, In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores, Tuesday, November 1, at 8 p.m. The performance is part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's 2011/12 Colburn Celebrity Recitals, which feature some of the world's leading virtuosos. Hahn is joined by pianist Valentina Lisitsa.

Hahn's recital includes Bach's Sonata No. 1 in G minor for Solo Violin, BWV 1001, Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 12, No. 2, and Brahms' Sonatensatz (Scherzo) in C minor. Interspersed through the program she performs 13 of the 27 pieces from her Encores project, an endeavor in which she commissioned composers to write short-form pieces for violin and piano. Hahn is premiering these works throughout the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons, and recording them along the way for release in the 2013/14 season. Twenty-six commissioned composers are featured in the project, and the final, 27th will be decided in a non-traditional fashion later in the year. The 13 encores performed in the recital include:

Lera Auerbach, Speak, Memory
Tina Davidson, Blue Curve of the Earth
Avner Dorman, Memory Games
Søren Nils Eichberg, Levitation
Christos Hatzis, Coming To
Jennifer Higdon, Echo Dash
Bun-Ching Lam, Solitude d'automne
Paul Moravec, Blue Fiddle
Nico Muhly, Two Voices
Einojuhani Rautavaara, Whispering
Max Richter, Mercy
Somei Satoh, Bifu
GillIan Whitehead, Torua

Hilary Hahn's probing interpretations, technical brilliance, and commitment to new music and the commissioning process have not only made her one of the most sought-after artists of our time, but also brought her love of classical music to a diverse audience. The 31-year-old has achieved international fame and recognition, including two Grammys, multiple "Diapason d'Or of the Year" and "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik" prizes, and the 2008 Classic FM / Gramophone Artist of the Year. In the 15 years since she began recording, Hahn has released 12 feature albums on the Deutsche Grammophon and Sony labels, in addition to three DVDs, an Oscar-nominated movie soundtrack, an award-winning recording for children, and various compilations.

Future recitals for the 2011/12 Colburn Celebrity recital series season include: Pianist Lang Lang (November 6, 2011); violinist Joshua Bell (February 7, 2012); pianist Leif Ove Andsnes (February 8, 2012); Jeffrey Kahane - Celebrating 15 years of Jeffrey Kahane at Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (March 7, 2012); Piatigorsky International Cello Festival (March 18, 2012); and baritone Matthias Goerne with Christoph Eschenbach as pianist (April 16 and 18, 2012).
